#YesAllWomen

For those of you who don't know there is a trending hashtag that has been going around various social media networks, especially twitter, known as #YesAllWomen. This all came to being in the aftermath of Elliot Rodger’s misogyny-fueled killing spree, the hashtag  #YesAllWomen emerged as ladies began airing everyday anecdotes of mistreatment, violence, and harassment. Some men were shocked as more and more people, not just those of the female gender, related their stories and experience to us in 140 characters. Not only did new stories come to light, but many people pointed out common flaws that we as women are used to.
However, there always seem to be a group of "those" men. #YesAllWomen tweets were combated with replies of "Not all men", hate, death threats, and if I do say so myself, just plain idiocy. Even after all those it still astounds me the sense of entitlement that some males have. Why is it that a movement focused on the female gender is suddenly spun back around to focus on males? One of my closest friends delve heavily into the #YesAllWomen tag. There she was pelted with mixed and confusing beliefs, men who contradicted themselves, and to my astonishment, a man who believed that the fact that everyone could own guns made all of us equal. Don't believe me, just read this conversation.
It's amazing that we put so much into teaching our girls things such as, don't leave your drink lying around, don't walk the streets at night, and don't wear anything too revealing, instead of teaching young boys do not drug or rape your date. Society, as general body, is unconciously teaching our boys that if a girl says "No," that really means, "Convince her or force her." I find it amazing that after years and years of fighting for our rights it looks like things are getting worse instead of better. So, yes all women because people are calling this movement a silly meme. Yes all women because apparently I am less worthy of being protected than some man's gun. Yes all women because it is 2014 and the biggest threat to my life makes up almost half of the country I live in.
